  5. Exsquisite. Have used Retina Ia & IIc, &Oly XA2 over the years. Plus-X in Rodinal or HC-110. Favorite cafe’s, Cafe Borgia, Bleeker and MacDougal, NYC, and Sound View Cafe, Pike Market, Seattle. Ordered XA-4 because of your photos. Hope to rcv it today or tomorrow. Also have Minox GT. Recently discovered that Kodak C41 process film BW400CN delivers good image, amazingly under-exposed, processed at WalMart 1-HR Photo. Almost blank areas of the negative deliver good contrast. Don’t know why. Only thing I can say, is when in doubt, as your photos so beautifully demonstrate, don’t hesitate, trip the shutter. Thanks for your inspiration.

  6. Stan thanks for visiting my web site. You’ll be extremely happy with the XA4. It’s in my pocket all the time. You should try using some Tri-X, shoot at 1600, develop in Diafine and you’ll find some gems. The XA4 is a pleasure to use and as you mentioned so easy. Keep clicking! Hope you share some of your XA4 photos with us!

  7. John, Thanks for the valuable info. I rcvd the XA4 and ran a roll of BW400CN through it…very nice. Got this computer last Christmas & still struggling with it. Also got a 35mm film scanner a couple weeks ago. From about 1992 thru 2002 I shot almost exclusively with a Mamiyaflex TLR, but I’ve just lost interest and drive in doing my own printing anymore. Also had a lot of 35mm negs that were never printed and started taking them to Walmart for printing. In studying the prints, I discovered that Plus-X and FP-4, for me, had “the glow”, no matter what developer, and that my Tri-X efforts were usually grainy or blocked highlights. Even my early TMY-400 was grainier than the 125 speed films. And when I moved to Nevada, I found the 400 speed films were sunny f8, not sunny f16, because there is no moisture in the air to fill the shadows here like there is on the coasts. Recent HP5+ in TMax1+15 has the glow and is just about grainless. I have 100ft rolls of PanF+, TMY-400, and Plus-X, but I certainly will try Tri-X in Diafine as you suggest & meanwhile try to learn how to print from the computer/scanner. Don’t know how to “share” photos to your site, but could e-mail a couple. John, thanks again for your example and your encouragement.

  8. Good to hear Stan….

You’ll like the Tri-X/Diafine combo although I’ve never tried printing it. To share photos I would recommend Flickr as you can upload photos and share them with about anyone. There’s no fee for the basic account so you’re good to go. Have fun with that XA4 and keep shooting!
